D-O-E isn’t your average artist, and therefore this isn’t your average bio. Rather than write this in the third person and pretend to be somebody else telling you how awesome I am, I’m going to personally address you and tell you that myself. I’m confident enough in myself to do that. Chalk it up to my ego if you want, but please don’t mistake it for a lack of professionalism. I just prefer a personal connection with anybody interested in my music. And I’m a nonconformist.
I’ve been writing and recording music for about eighteen years, but in 2001 I took on the identity of D-O-E and decided to get serious about music, to pursue my passion as a career. Since then, my music has taken me on an incredible journey that is really just beginning. Including all of my side projects, I’ve released 21 self-produced full-length CDs in addition to demos and EPs which I’ve lost count of. My music has topped the charts on music sites like BetaRecords.com and SongVault.fm. I’ve worked with artists in various corners of the country, from New York to California, and I’ve played live shows in many different cities along the way. Through these experiences, I learned a lot about the music business and about life. I made a lot of music that I am proud of and a lot of friends and fans all around the globe.
My music. I am influenced by so many different genres that I had to make up a new name for my style. I call it sykophunk, which breaks down simply: it’s crazy but it will make you move. Though I perform a lot of my lyrics in a rap style, the sound and attitude of my tracks reflect equal elements of hip hop, rock/metal, gothic, electronica – I’ll even throw in some polka if it helps push the message or mood of a particular song. I like to promote a sense of unity, a social and spiritual connection between people. When people listen to my music, I hope it moves them: physically, mentally, and/or spiritually.
A lot of artists say “music is my life,” it’s sort of a cliché. But I think my level of dedication is obvious in my songs and track record. Music is my passion, my therapy, my bread and butter. It’s a compulsion that I cannot control, nor would I ever want to. In 2008 alone, I put together four CDs, did a number of guest appearances and collaborations, did a small tour, and got a song placed on an upcoming movie soundtrack. Currently I am working on more collaborations and releasing tracks weekly for free download, leading up to my new album scheduled to drop in April. I’m probably one of the hardest working underground musicians in existence. No matter how little it pays at times, no matter what life throws at me – the saga of sykophunk carries on. It’s just what I do. I wouldn’t want to do anything else.
